6 Things You Should Know Before Buying a Face Mask

Face masks have become a necessity since Covid-19 has taken over the world and changed the way people live their day-to-day lives. Face masks, social distancing, and washing hands have become rules for survival. Of course, there are many different types of masks out there now, and you should choose the one that provides you with the best protection. But, before you buy a face mask, here are a few things you need to be aware of.

  1. Some Fabrics Are Better Than Others

Some fabrics are more effective in protecting you than others because the spacing between individual yarns in the fabric is different, meaning that some fabrics have bigger or smaller holes. These holes can allow droplets or particles to pass through, which can cause infection. So choose fabrics with smaller gaps.

  1. Waterproof Face Masks Are Good for You

Waterproof face masks don’t only keep your face dry but also repel particles. These masks are very breathable and can repel water even with multiple washing and drying. For extra protection, a water resistant face mask comes with a filter to ensure that you breathe fresh and pure air. These masks are also very comfortable as the fabric used is very soft.

  1. Choose Multiple Layered Masks

Wearing a mask made of multiple layers of fabric is very effective because it increases the filtration against virus particles. However, it may not be easy to breathe while wearing them. If you want to strike a balance between filtration and breathing, choose masks with only two layers. Furthermore, for extra protection, experiment with masks that have more layers until you find one you are comfortable with.

  1. Watch out for Filters

Although filters in face masks are effective, they can do more harm than good because some filters contain fiberglass, which is harmful if inhaled. If you feel the need to use a filter for extra protection, place the filter between the layers of fabric to reduce your chances of inhaling any fibers.

  1. Your Mask Should Fit

The fabric of the mask indeed is essential, but your mask should also be a good fit. The mask must adequately fit your face and cover your mouth and nose without any gaps. Ensure there is no space between the mask and your face because any space allows a virus to pass through. If your mask doesn’t fit, you can make it fit by using nose wires or braces.

  1. Avoid Bandanas

Bandanas aren’t considered the best option. They are loosely woven, and, as mentioned before, spacing in the fabric allows for droplets and particles to pass through. If you can, it is advised to avoid bandanas altogether and choose fabrics with smaller holes. Bandanas only reduce droplets by 50 percent, which puts them at the bottom.

Covid is very serious and dangerous. It has killed over 3 million people so far, and it isn’t showing any signs of slowing down. Make sure to never leave the house without a mask. Additionally, never take it off in public or pull it down under your nose. You aren’t only protecting yourself, but the people around you as well.
